Pete Goss at Savills Regatta

The third annual Savills Regatta hosted by Savills and Mylor Yacht Club took place on Monday, May 18. Forty teams had entered but unfortunately some were deterred by the blustery 25-30 knot south westerly winds. In fact the 23 teams had an excellent race with the occasional drama for some on the spinnaker legs and there were a number of exciting finishes.

Race officer David Cunliffe and the Mylor team laid the start line off St Just and windward marks towards Trefusis that gave a longer beat for the multi-hull and IRC classes and a slightly shorter one for the two PY classes and Sunbeams. The multi-hulls and Sunbeam class results were straightforward with sole survivors Verity Slater of Follet Stock Solicitors in ‘Kiff’ and Roger Graffy in ‘Milly’ respectively receiving their well earned winner’s prizes.

The IRC class enjoyed a typically competitive start with Stuart Sawyer’s Corby 29 ‘Gotcha’ (TMS Financial Solutions) soon into her stride and battling the St Austell Brewery team on Rob Mably’s beautiful Swan 47 ‘Sarabande’ to the first windward mark. The Melges 24 of H2OK Systems smoked down the runs at 20 knots in an effort to defend last year’s honours but ultimately it was Garth Weaver’s Projection 26 ‘Big Purple’ from Helford which sailed a faultless race to win this hard fought class and the trophy for top private team of the day.

E class ‘Kernow Dolphin’ extended her lead and ‘Jethro’ soon regained second. Jonathan Haward’s very smart County Homesearch/Stephens & Scown Solicitors team on the immaculate Hallberg Rassy ‘Adagio’ included none other than Pete Goss and came a very respectable fourth in class and were convincing winners of the best-dressed crew prize for the third year running!

The slower PY class included the stunning 55ft Gaff ketch ‘Donna Capel’ which took the day’s Concours D’Elegance award. Bernie Bagley’s ‘Frenetic Caper’ (Falmouth Boat Construction) led on the water but was pipped by 10 seconds by Chris Davis and Laurel Eathorne in ‘Pallisander’. The Savills Regatta has fast become renowned for combining a competitive race with excellent hospitality ashore and this year was no exception with no less than 258 Pimms being served by Mylor Yacht Club on the historic quay.

It is a tradition that the entry fees from the Savills Regatta go to a nominated charity and this year £875 was raised for Cornwall Playing for Success - which helps children achieve their best by using sport to bridge the gap between education and unrealised potential. A giant cheque was presented to founding trustee Pete Goss at the prize giving. A selection of prizes courtesy of Amy Smith at Musto were then presented to class winners by Goss and Savills regional director Martin Lamb.
